The Physical Distance Diaries
When physical distancing and shelter in place orders were put in place in March 2020, my lack of commute and reduced teaching schedule meant I could be in the studio far more. I began making a piece of artwork a day, a written reflection accompanying each collage. Initially, this was a 30-day Art Quarantine challenge taken on with a former student, but I continued for 80 days. The Physical Distance Diaries are all mixed media pieces using my original monotype work, paint, ink, and an old book on Marie Antoinette's failed flight out of Paris. Simple rules and materials, but transformative during those fraught and troubled times. Creative structure for the win, once again.
For now, just the images are here on the website, in chronological order. You can read the text that accompanies each piece over on my Instagram page.
The Physical Distance Diaries also exists as a soft cover, small batch book printed in Dalton, Massachusetts by The Studley Press. Yay books! Yay art! Yay small businesses! Yay buying local! Please get in touch if you are interested in having a copy of your own.
